UAW-FORD host 'Opening Day' for newly renovated Balduck Park

DETROIT - UAW-Ford today celebrated “Opening Day” of the newly remodeled Balduck Park in a ceremony featuring: community leaders, current and former members of the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Lions, representatives of Eagle Sports and residents of East English Village.

In an effort to provide residents a clean and safe sporting environment, UAW-Ford donated nearly $2 million to install new restrooms, bleachers, scoreboards, lighting, grass and landscaping. Located in Detroit’s East English Village, at Chandler Park Dr. and Canyon St., a parade featuring Cass Technical High School High School Marching Band kicked off the festivities.

Several community leaders were in attendance, including: UAW-Ford Vice President Jimmy Settles; Ford Motor Company Vice President of Labor Affairs Bill Dirksen; and, Eagle Sports baseball teams, along with former and current Detroit Tigers players Willie Horton, Torii Hunter, Austin Jackson, Rajai Davis and Team Mascot PAWS.

“It’s not often that you get to work with someone who shares your vision and passion for the community like retired vice president of labor affairs for Ford Motor Company, Marty Mulloy,” said UAW-Ford Vice President Jimmy Settles. “But I was fortunate to have that kind of partner during the process of constructing the UAW-Ford Field at Balduck Park.

“Marty began this journey with me, was instrumental in getting funds approved for the project, and saw the need to provide a state-of-the-art ballpark for our kids in the City of Detroit,” Settles added. “I am so proud and so happy to see our joint dream finally realized.”

“We are honored to be a part of the renovation at Balduck Park,” said Ford Motor Company Vice President of Labor Affairs Bill Dirksen. “At Ford, we are not only focused on building great cars, but great communities as well.”

Eagle Sports, in conjunction with the City of Detroit, will contribute to the maintenance and upkeep of Balduck Park. “Kids and the community in Detroit deserve sports programs every bit as good as any other community,” said Eagle Sports Club Founding Director Doug Kempton. “With the support and help from UAW-Ford we can continue offering quality programs with world-class amenities. This would not be possible without partners like UAW-Ford.”
